La clé s'insère dans la fente du vilebrequin et s'aligne avec la rainure de clé au centre du volant. Cela permet au volant d'inertie et au vilebrequin de tourner à la même vitesse, et si la clé se casse, cela peut provoquer des ratés d'allumage ou de mauvaises performances du moteur.
